26. Reflecting upon the school year thus far, what things have gone well with using netbooks in your classroom.  Please list a few items.

*Being able to incorporate Spelling City into my Spelling Curriculum *Students are able to use the netbooks as a learning tool in their own education *The flexibility the netbooks allow me when planning my curriculum *Use a blog as a tool to discuss Literature
 (11%)

Blogging has added a new element to my classroom. We have used a lot of on line games to support things like states & capitals, the Constitution, Census, and many more topics.
 (11%)

I feel that my students are excited and feel engaged in their learning. They are excited to share with me the new things that they are learning
 (11%)

I am able to affect writing in progress much more easily than in the past. I can oversee and instruct on how to access appropriate info. from the internet. Most students have written more than ever, and my being able to monitor writing has given me the opportunity to effect improvement immediately.
 (11%)

After initial difficulties with the wirless situation, we have had good luck with the signal.
 (11%)

Spelling City Wikis Research Choice Activities such as Internet4Classrooms during Study Hall
 (11%)

Having regular access to the netbooks has improved the ease to which students can produce and share and collaborate on many types of projects. It has also increased access to tools that help students visualize and engage with difficult concepts.

 -Spelling City -research -writting papers

A few things that have gone well this year using the netbooks in my classroom have been: utilzing web-based applications such as voki avatars, glogster, and pbworks, utilizing the 5th Grade homepage for linking information and blogging, and incorportating Book Builder in my curriculum.

27. Reflecting upon the use of netbooks in your classroom this year, what are some simple things that would make them a more useful tool in your classroom.

 * Having more freedom to troubleshoot small problems on my own without having to fill out a SOS or walking the netbook down to Josh *Having access to all tools that will help me have a web 2.0 classroom *Being able to have all the functions work on the netbook, like the webcam and microphone *Having more training on how to use Linux and OpenOffice Suite
 (11%)

It would be nice if they didn't have to share but had their own to use for all classes. It would make it easier for them to save their work and not have to worry about it being only on the computer they use.
 (11%)

It would be wonderful if every child had a netbook and we didn't have to share between three classrooms. It is difficult to say the least to coordinate a project without dominating the netbooks for several weeks in order not to drag the project out forever.
 (11%)

My only concern is the longevity of the machines.
 (11%)

Replacement headphones, and more time in the day to use them!
 (11%)

Could we block the students from changing the background or toolbars?
 (11%)

Any web based Java application is an issue with the netbook. I would use more webbased interactive sites if Java consistently worked. The Camera and Microphone do NOT currently work. If they worked I would use the netbooks for more interactive multimedia projects. They are currently limited to text based applications mostly because of the limits with Java, camera and microphone. Also because I can not easily access my home wireless network I can not take the netbook home to prepare lessons and improve my proficiency with the netbook. Also having control over some of the everyday issues such as the problem of students being unable to login, that requires the netbook to be turned in is a major inconvenience for the student. It appears to be a very simple fix when they are turned in and seems that if the access to correct this issue was shared it would solve on regular hassle.
 (11%)

A true 1:1 implementation, additional training on troubleshooting, better printer access.
 (11%)

If the students were able to use the audio and video functions of the netbook to create presentations, a microphone and better headphones (maybe headphones & microphone combined), and an easy fix to default for the desktop/panel.

Overall, I believe that this 1st year of implementation has gone very well. I am glad I have the netbooks as a learning tool in my classroom.
 (14%)

Most of the students take good care of the computer but you always have a few that just don't care. I worry that as they have them every year they will not be as careful because it will be old to them. It will be a challenge to keep them interested.
 (14%)

I would love to see a printer and netbooks in each classroom so that we could truly actively engage students in learning each and every day. To see their smiles brighten when we have a project to do is wonderful and the excitement is contagious. Having a printer in each room would eliminate a lot of disruptions.
 (14%)

I have really enjoyed being able to use the netbooks, we are lucky to have this tool! I look forward to using them more and more for collaborative projects and presentations.
 (14%)

Josh and Bea have been extremely supportive in all we have done with Netbooks and the implementation of 1:1 would not have been possible or as successful as it has been with out all they have done. In the first part of the survey some of the "Nevers" were checked because of the limitations the netbooks have with Java, cameras, and microphones
 (14%)

I found it hard to respond to this survey since 4th grade doesn't even have 1:1.
 (14%)

Using netbooks has been a challenge but it is an incredible opportunity for students to become more engaged in their own learning.
